An Overview of the SPEED-CARRIER WDM System

By using Wave Divison technologies, fibre optic capacities can be elegantly and cost-efficiently multiplied. A few years ago, expensive WDM optics and complex installation processes prohibited wide-spread commercial use of WDM systems for regional and local fibre optic connections. These limitations are overcome by the current generation of WDM systems. This SPEED-CARRIER 1U size is an extremely flexible and compact chassis. Just four slots provide an outstanding port density for powerful access and aggregation modules as well as optical amplifiers. This chassis can be used for multiple purposes e.g. for integration of passive SPEED-CWDM multiplexer or for up to four active SPEED rack mounted modules. A redundant AC or/and DC power supply – mixed operation possible as well – creates a platform redundancy for highly available networks. No minimum distance to other units is required because of the perfected lateral concept for air circulation.

The SPEED-CARRIER with its 5U size is one of the most versatile and flexible 19“ chassis available in today‘s telecommunication market. An outstanding port density can be achieved by integrating up to 16 system and management module in one chassis. The SPEED-CARRIER 5U supports all types of SPEED transponder modules up to 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps, WDM units, TDM modules and EDFA as well as RAMAN amplifiers. The clever and future-proof concept is already designed for upcoming high-speed applications without any additional costs. Redundant power supplies for 230 V AC, 24 V DC and 48 V DC are  available in various power classes and can also be used in mixed operations. An intelligent and redundant on-demand cooling system is provided which locates heat sources for selective cooling. This feature extends the life-time of a cooling module and thus provides stability for the entire platform. The SPEED-CARRIER 5U features a redundant on-demand cooling system which selectivity cools only modules with high temperatures. This extends other chassis inside the same rack. Therefore the required space is identical to those of a 3U system. A management connection can be realized by a standard copper interface (RJ45) or a switched optical SFP port. Furthermore management information – even of 3rd party systems – can be transmitted to a central location by using a separate wavelength.

The SPEED-DUALLINE 10G converts two independent 10.3 Gbps Ethernet signals into a corresponding wavelength in CWDM and DWDM network infrastructures. Combined with the 3R functionality (Reamplification, Re-shaping and Re-timing) a transmission of 10G Ethernet over long distances can be implemented.
